Artist Statement
Throughout my career I have primarily focused on women’s issues within our culture. The body of these works are paper and cloth collages in the form of quilts. Sometimes referred to as one of the domestic arts, traditional cloth quilts often brought both beauty and warmth into the home, others were made in honor of significant life events and as carriers of political messages. The repetitive and meditative qualities of the quilting process are contemplative. Making these gives me time to think about the issues. The frailty of the paper quilt, reference domesticity and social norms that are obsolete or out of fashion, such as corsets, hoop skirts and the art of letter writing. The more durable cloth quilts speak about social norms that are embedded in our culture such as gun violence.
